PET - Preliminary English Test - B1
NEW Computer Based (CB) Cambridge ESOL ExaminationsCambridge ESOL also offers some examinations to be taken on the computer. There are a few advantages to computer based examinations which are explained below. Candidates will in the future have the option to sign up for computer based examinations in the online regstration, if their chosen exam is available as computer based exam.
What is the main difference between paper-based and computer-based exams?
The main difference is that the Reading, Writing and Listening papers are performed on a PC in a computer lab. The speaking exam will still be conducted by examiners in exactly the same way as previously.
Are there advantages to the computer based test?
CB
PET will produce the same exact results as the PB
PET. It is just the delivery mode that is different. For some people working on the PC is easier and quicker than for others.
Is it easy to follow the test on the PC?
It is very easy, as the entire layout as well as the functionality was tested with a large number of students and their feedback was taken into consideration when developing the test.
Some Advantages
- For the listening the candidates use headphones. The candidates can adjust the volume of the sound at their individual convenience.
- The field for the writing components provide a "word-count".
- Navigating within the test is very quick and easy.
- The navigation show in one glance which questions have been answered or not.
What is PET?
The
Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET) is the second level of
Cambridge ESOL exam. It is an intermediate level exam, set at level B1 of the council of Europe’s Common European Framework for modern languages.
PET recognises the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.
Who is PET for?
PET is designed for people whose
English is adequate for many practical purposes, including work, study and social situations. It indicates an ability to cope with situations which require a predictable use of language, read simple textbooks and articles and write simple personal letters, or make notes during a meeting. Candidates should have a wide grasp of vocabulary and be able to use appropriate communication styles for a variety of situations. They should be starting to do more than simply pick out facts and should be able to detect opinions, attitudes and moods in spoken and written English.
Why Choose PET?
PET covers the four main language skills -
reading,
writing,
listening and
speaking, as well as assessing
grammar and
vocabulary, testing with material from real life situations. It therefore provides evidence of practical skills, and indicates sufficient ability to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs, and in many countries, such as tourism, where contact with
English speakers is required.
What does the exam involve?
Three papers: Reading & Writing, Listening and Speaking
Reading & Writing (1 hour)The Reading & Writing paper assesses the ability to read and understand factual texts taken from signs, brochures, newspapers and magazines. Candidates need to be able to understand the main messages and the effect they may have on a reader, and to
have strategies for dealing with unfamiliar words and structures.
This paper includes a variety of tasks including filling in gaps in simple text, completing forms, and writing a short report or letter around 100 words to demonstrate control of structure, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
Listening (30 min.)The Listening paper assesses the ability to understand recorded material such as public announcements and dialogues, which will be delivered at a moderate pace. Candidates need to be able to understand the factual information in the recordings, and to assess the attitudes and intentions of the speakers.
Speaking (up to 10 min.)The Speaking Test assesses the ability to interact in conversational
English with an examiner and with another candidate. Candidates need to be able to answer and ask questions about themselves and to talk freely about their likes and dislikes.
