KET - Key English Test - A2
NEW Computer Based (CB) Cambridge ESOL Examinations
Cambridge ESOL also offers some examinations to be taken on the computer. There are a few advantages to computer based examinations which are explained below. Candidates will in the future have the option to sign up for computer based examinations in the online regstration, if their chosen exam is available as computer based exam.
What is the main difference between paper-based and computer-based exams?
The main difference is that the Reading, Writing and Listening papers are
performed on a PC in a computer lab. The speaking exam will still be conducted
by examiners in exactly the same way as previously.
Are there advantages to the computer based test?
CB KET will produce the same exact results as the
PB KET. It is just the delivery
mode that is different. For some people working on the PC is easier and quicker
than for others.
Is it easy to follow the test on the PC?
It is very easy, as the entire layout as well as the functionality was tested with
a large number of students and their feedback was taken into consideration
when developing the test.
Some Advantages
- For the listening the candidates use headphones. The candidates can adjust the volume of the sound at their individual convenience.
- The field for the writing components provide a "word-count".
- Navigating within the test is very quick and easy.
- The navigation show in one glance which questions have been answered or not.
What is KET for?
The
KET - Cambridge KEY
English Test is the first level of
Cambridge ESOL Exams. It is an elementary level exam, set at level A2 of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework for modern languages.
KET recognises the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications at a basic level.
KET enables candidates to demonstrate a level of
English that is useful when travelling in
English speaking countries.
Who is the KET for?
KET is designed for learners who have basic
English skills, of the kind needed when travelling in a foreign country. Candidates should be able to understand main points of simple texts, to communicate in the most familiar situations, and to understand short, standard notices and simple spoken directions.
Why choose KET?
KET is based on language used in real life situations and covers the four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. It provides an assessment of practical skills, and encourages the development of abilities which can be used while travelling, as well as in study and working situations.
KET is an ideal first step for those wishing to progress towards the Preliminary English Test and the other
Cambridge ESOL Exams.
What does the exam involve?
KET has three papers: Reading & Writing, Listening and Speaking
Reading & Writing (1 Hour and 10 min.)The Reading and Writing paper assesses the ability to read and understand factual texts taken from signs, brochures, newspapers and magazines. Candidates need to be able to understand the main messages, and have strategies for dealing with unfamiliar words and structures.
Candidates are assessed on their ability to complete gaps in simple texts, transfer information to forms, and complete an everyday writing task, such as writing a short note message of around 20-25 words, to demonstrate control of structure, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
Listening (25 min.)The Listening test assesses the ability to understand recorded material such as announcements and monologues, delivered at a moderate pace, and to understand factual information in the recordings.
Speaking (8-10 min.)The speaking Test assesses the ability to interact in conversational English with an examiner and with another candidate. Candidates need to be able to answer and ask questions about themselves and to talk freely about their likes and dislikes. Candidates normally take the Speaking Test in pairs.
